Babni Lal, Economic Advisor, Ministry of Textiles and Shri Ranjan Kumar, Commissioner, Vindhyachal Mandal, Mirzapur, marked their presence on the third day of the Expo. From creating new concepts about the carpets, to giving it a different perspective, that carpets should not only be used as floor covers but also wall hangings, this Expo has it all. Mr. Umar Hammeed, 2nd Vice Chairman, CEPC and M/s Hannan’s Oriental Rugs, the owner of the most expensive carpet in the Expo, while introducing his products explained the reason why this carpet is so expensive is that this “ 9/12 foot carpet has 2500 knots per square inch, which required 3 and a half years to be manufactured and is completely hand knotted Silk Carpet. This particular type of knotting process is called Sinnah. It’s also available in Iran, but they have different format of making it.” Mr. Nauman Waziri of M/s Waziri India, the owner of the Carpet Design Award 2017 for Innovations at Domotex International Trade Fair at Hannover (Germany) winning carpet for its unique design, said, “We wanted to change the characteristics of carpet, to be used as a wall hanging. The carpet is made up of only two colors in monochrome palate. The idea behind this carpet was to bring the nature to people on their walls, through carpet. The size of this carpet is 8/10 foot and is completely hand knotted. This wool and silk carpet took 3 months to be manufactured by 3 weavers working together to give my imagination of replacing the painting with the carpet, ashape.” Mr. Vijay Kapoor, M/s Kapoor Carpets, shares “We are in this industry since 1903 and have been part of this expo since the very beginning. Today M/s Kapoor Carpets is run by the fifth generation of the family tree. We have received ‘The Certificate of Honour’ at British Empire Exhibition held in London in 1924 and since then there is no turning back to us. The only thing we are lacking behind, in terms of industry is the unsuitable flexibility in price, which I would like to demand from the Govt. to look after.” The Expo is organized under the aegis of Govt. of India focuses on the Highly Labour Intensive Indian Handmade Carpet Industry and aims to provide employment to about 20 Lakhs workers/ artisans especially women directly or indirectly in the rural areas.
